The Lovetones
Matthew J Tow first caught the world's attention through his previous band, Drop City, who combined ethereal pop melodies and lush psychedelic textures to gain a rousing reputation throughout the nineties as kings of the acid-soaked soliloquy, both in their native Sydney as well as throughout Europe, England, and other outposts of civilization.
They released five albums internationally, and toured all over the world playing with like-minded artists like Stereolab, the Manic Street Preachers, and the Stone Roses. Choosing to quit at their peak, Tow took some time off to write and record in the USA (with BJM's Anton Newcombe, among others) and UK. In 2001, Tow returned to Australia with the idea of making a mature-sounding pop record. The sound in his head resembled the pioneering spirit of latter-period Beatles and the heartfelt melodies of US singer-songwriter Elliott Smith. It was clear Tow needed The Lovetones to get back to the root of classic pop song writing.
The results are heard on their new album, Be What You Want, a striking piece of pop if ever there was one. Featuring all the trademarks of a breakthrough album - soul stirring lyrics ("Be What You What"), memorable melodies ("Something Good) and commanding sound ("You're The One") - it's destined to bring The Lovetones universal success.
