Seneca
Jon Hassell voice, guitar
Brad Caetano - drums, keyboards
Jon MacMahan - bass
Dan Cunningham - guitar
In explosions of delay-soaked psychedelics, Seneca revisits the '70s with the hindsight of a modern perspective. The band's compositional approach owes as much to classic progressive rock as it does to contemporary electronica, while their arrangements play out like stylistic collages. Elements of disco and new wave merge with sweeping guitars, Stewart Copeland-esque rhythms, and dramatic vocals that bring everything into focus.
Far from simply supplementing their recorded work, Seneca's shows demonstrate how well a young band can consistently set an intense mood under the unpredictable circumstances of live performance. Their audiences are often torn between the desire to dance and the desire to close their eyes while letting Seneca's music take them - usually doing a little bit of both by the time each night's over.
There's a volatile line between art and accessibility - Seneca have aligned themselves with like-minded bands such as The Mars Volta, Lake Trout, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor, creating music that challenges listeners to question why that line was ever drawn in the first place.
