El Gato
El Gato, formed in Denton, Texas in early 1995, has wrapped-up and released its fourth recording and first full-length album, Were Birds. The album was made available in Dallas in January 2002 on the heels of the bands preview single, "The Christmas Single." The single topped the bestseller charts at Dallas indie store Good Records, and prompted a sold out CD release party for Were Birds. Mark Pirro, Tripping Daisy/Polyphonic Spree bassist, produced the album. With an orchestral blend of layered guitars, keyboards and vocals, El Gatos non-traditional approach to songwriting and constant sonic experimentation has caught the attention of local and national media and music enthusiasts. Fans of Beulah, Elf Power, Grandaddy and Built To Spill will appreciate the pop diversity found on Were Birds. The Dallas Observer stated, "Were Birds is a breathless album, with the naiveté of a kid singing along with his favorite song and the confidence to pile an orchestra on top of the Marshall stacks, Rock and Pop written in capital letters on a billboard."
"An ambitious full-length debut that soars, swoops and flies like the birds they profess to be, El Gatos Were Birds makes a strong case for Headphone Album Of The Year." (CMJ New Music Report - May 2002)
