The Exit
Guitarist Ben Brewer and drummer Gunnar grew up in New York City. Punk scene compatriots, they have been hanging together, sniping backstage beers and sneaking into shows since they were shy of legal driving age. Gunnar and Ben gave way to their destiny in 1999, forming The Exit with bassist Tim Shaya (who has since departed the band and settled into a state of marital bliss).
In the fall of 2000, Ben moved to Boston to go to Emerson College and study politics. However, his focus remained on music not poli-sci. Even though separated from his bandmates, his desire to make music never wavered. At a local rock show, Ben struck up conversation and a common chord with bassist Jeff DaRosa. Cassette tapes and phone numbers were exchanged. The three-piece was complete and The Exit was reborn!
The Exit penned the majority of the record in a collection of Boston practice spaces before they moved back to New York City to fine-tune and complete the process. While working on some demos at a Spring Street studio, producer extraordinaire Daniel Rey (Ramones, Misfits, Murphys Law) happened by. Jeff recalls the lucky confluence: "Daniel was just walking by. The street gate was open. We gave him a demo and I guess he liked it." Rey went on to produce the album.
The Exits first show was at a downtown pool hall in New York City. It was commencement of a state of being that The Exit welcome: on the road more than off of it. Constant touring, including stints with Piebald, Rival Schools, Thursday and The Ghost, has cemented The Exits reputation for energetic, dynamic and awe-inspiring performances.
