The story of Antifreeze begins in Appleton, WI. In early 1994 guitarist/singer/songwriter Jon Hietpas met drummer Derek Rice and the two became good friends. In middle school they jammed after school almost every afternoon. Two weeks later they started a band in November of 1994, and played their first show at the school dance.
They spent 2 years writing songs, recording, and searching for a bass player after their first band broke up in May of 1996. Antifreeze started in late 1997 when Jon and Derek met Eric Filen. Filen performs on the available self-titled LP, recorded in March of 1998. The band toured the Midwest/east that summer and played numerous shows in their local area that whole year. This gave the young guys a feel of what being in a band is all about. Jon and Derek became more determined, while Eric lost interest.
In April of '99, Eric was more than replaced by second singer/songwriter Tim Crowley, who added the dimension this band needed: another sound, a different look, and a more determined attitude. The remainder of that year they spent their entire time recording, practicing, or playing at local venues. In September, the guys were invited to play some shows with Jon's favorite band "the Ataris." Cut to May 2000, Kris Roe from The Ataris gives Joe from Kung Fu a copy of a demo CD that Antifreeze had recorded the previous year, with his recommendation that this was a band worthy of Kung Fu Records. Joe was so impressed with their songs; he offered them a record deal.
The Album "Four Letter Words" was released on April 3, 2001 on Kung Fu Records. A video is available for the single "Ordinary," which can be seen at www.kungfurecords.com
