Shai Hulud

Reach Beyond the Sun (Metal Blade Records)
release date: 2/19/2013
by Mike Delano

It's always heartening when Dune is referenced, especially by something that isn't embarrassing. Just like no artist ever wants Dane Cook to say he likes their stuff, for fear of never being cool again, no one wants Frank Herbert's badass 1965 sci-fi novel to be referenced by, like, Hinder. Thankfully Shai Hulud (named after the sandworms in the book) have been cranking out their awesome metal/hardcore hybrid sounds for nearly 20 years, so they do their name proud. "A Human Failing" is heavy and intense, but it also has a killer groove and sense of melancholy that distinguishes Shai Hulud from the throngs of other bands who mash metal and hardcore together in much less thoughtful ways.
