Disgust of Us

by Scott Hefflon

Debut from these two East Coast transplants and two West Coast natives. Female-fronted post rock, often hard-hitting, sometimes mellow and wandering, sometimes a decent male voice leads, sometimes an annoying male voice howls, sometimes the female vocals yelp like the neighbor's dog. Strong, immediate production helps the weaker of the songs here, and they embolden the strong ones to be put side by side with "real songs by real bands." You know what I mean: Bands with more than one release to their credit who know what to yank and what to showoff and what to let linger like a fart in an elevator, just cuz. When given the charitable judging a new and growing band often needs while they work out the kinks and find their sound, Disgust of Us have many, many good qualities and obvious skills, and they have a huge headstart on the majority of unsigned bands with a debut CD. Watch this band.
