Moose Blood

I'll Keep You In Mind, From Time to Time (No Sleep)
By Mike Delano

I gotta tell you, I'm not usually one for acoustic tales of heartbreak. If the sounds of something vaguely Dashboard Confessional-like is approaching, I'm usually running for the nearest exit. But UK indie rockers Moose Blood definitely got me with "Cherry," the leadoff track from their debut album I'll Keep You In Mind, From Time To Time. Singer Eddy Brewerton is endearingly raw and direct as he details his post-breakup emotions, and the simplicity of the lyrics and arrangement help it land with great impact. The album never gets that stark again, but it does shift quite comfortably into a fully entertaining emo rock record for the remaining ten tracks. Songs like "Anyway" and "Gum" take a bright-eyed, windows-down, optimistic viewpoint of young love, while harder-edged cuts like "I Hope You're Missing Me" recall the great heights reached by bands like Idlewild and Consumed. The lyrics go a little overboard and throwaway with the pop culture references at times ("you make me feel like Jimmy Dean/you make me feel like Morrissey"), but on the whole the album is an exciting and promising introduction to a band that has hit the ground running.
