Carnal Forge

Aren't You Dead Yet? (Century Media)
by Eric Chon

How many Swedish death metal bands are there? I think I've lost count. Well, add Carnal Forge to the growing pile. Sounding a lot like older Soilwork isn't really a bad thing, but how about trying something a bit different? I know Carnal Forge can do it: If Aren't You Dead Yet? is any indication, we have a talented and accomplished band here. But I can't help feeling that this is a paint-by-numbers affair. Melodic dueling guitars? Check. Super-fast, semi-groovy rhythm section? Check. Yell/scream vocals? Yup, it's all there.

Aren't You Dead Yet? isn't a bad album. Really. It's catchy and well played, but it fails to deliver. Bring me back after one or two more albums.
