The Kickbacks

Blindside View
by Katy Shea

Traditional, plaintive, and steady, The Kickbacks deliver an album that's lit up with strong American rock influences. I'm sure lead singer Tad Overbaugh is tired of comparisons to Paul Westerberg, but The Replacements are all over this CD. There are also moments of straight-ahead bluesy rock (I'm reminded of Tom Hambridge's modern throwback style) as well as more confessional, folky melodies. Overbaugh's writing style also glimmers of The Push Stars (another Boston band made good), but the country/traditional rock 'n' roll theme prevails. The band's simple songwriting and strong sense of rhythmic movement and lyrical honesty are commendable.
