Words (Howling)
by Katy Shea

Smart and inventive rock, Steely Dan meets Ben Folds with glimmers of everyone from Barenaked Ladies to REM. Here's a band who lets us see their influences, but keenly and through their individualistic and unique eyes. No copycat rehash, you hear these familiar sounds colored and enhanced with Homunculous' own original stamp and engaging style. They display thoughtful and earnest philosophies about the world around them, both lyrically and musically spinning their impressions of the world through a web of their intellectual and visceral experience. Overall, the album is personal and communicative, accesssible and diverse. Homunculous does a great job of preserving their own voice amidst some pretty slick production and editing, the result being some well-produced, varied think rock... but you can still hear them from the inside.
