Friction

Hours of Operation (Polyvinyl)
by Tim Den

Before Hey Mercedes, before Braid, guitarist/vocalist Bob Nanna beat the skins and yelled profusely for punk trio Friction, a band that now holds legendary status in Midwest indie music history. Compiled here for the first time are the band's entire recording career, including all sorts of unreleased stuff. Two CDs, lots of liner notes and pictures, plus a buttload of songs that showcase Nanna's (and his bandmates') developing songwriting skills. Even at this stage, Friction possessed much more cohesiveness than brother band Cap'n Jazz. Energetic and beaming with youthful optimism and enthusiasm, Friction reminds all of us of our first bands.
