Screeching Weasel

Teen Punks in Heat (Panic Button)
by Scott Hefflon

Great name for a punk record, and that's exactly what this is. As solid and strong as classic Screeching Weasel, the originators (along with pals, The Queers) of "whoa-a-wa-oh" pop-punk, Teen Punks... blasts out a slew of new tunes, often only about a minute long, all honest and straightforward and "anyone can do this"-style the likes of which we rarely see. While that may make this dated, perhaps a pleasant whiff of nostalgia, the simple beauty of a song like the instrumental "The First Days of Autumn" cannot be denied. And the addition of Teen Idol guitarist Phillip Aaron Presley fills the middle even more, taking the former garage vibe, bypassing the "Ryan Greene" sound, and hinting at muscle car power like Speedealer without actually sounding that Motörhead. There's just a solid, cock-sure power there that's definitely amplified from before. And Ben, as always, is scratchily droning and straining admirably, practically defining the honest, everyman vocal approach.
